The usage trends of modern automobile steering devices

It is understood that around the world, automotive recirculating ball type steering gear accounts for about 45%, rack and pinion type steering gear accounts for about 40%, worm and roller type steering gear accounts for about 10%, and other types of steering gear account for about 5%. Circular ball steering gear has been steadily developing. In Western Europe, there has been a great development of rack and pinion steering gear. The characteristic of Japanese automobile steering gear is that the proportion of recirculating ball type steering gear is increasing. Different types of vehicles equipped with different types of engines in Japan use different types of steering gear. The recirculating ball type steering gear used in buses has grown from 62.5% in the 1960s to 100% today (worm and roller type steering gear has been eliminated in buses). Most large and small trucks use recirculating ball steering gear, but rack and pinion steering gear has also developed. The circulating ball type steering gear for minivans accounts for 65%, and the rack and pinion type accounts for 35%.

The power-Steering Pump pressurizes the hydraulic fluid that helps the driver turn the steering wheel. Signs of steering-pump failure include leaks, noises or decreased assistance while steering. The immediate loss of power assist is more likely a sign of a broken drive belt or the loss of steering fluid. Most vehicles employ this type of mechanical/ hydraulic power steering, but because their pumps rob power and efficiency even when the car isn’t turning, a small percentage of cars use an electric pump and many new vehicles now have electric power assist.
