Product Description

How does a Power Steering Pump work?

Generally, vane pump is composed of a pump body with double arc curves in the inner chamber, a slotted rotor, vanes and other parts. Some are installed on the flywheel housing at the rear end of the engine, and are also driven by timing gears. When the engine is running, the booster pump rotor is driven to rotate, and the vanes move outward along the blade grooves under the action of centrifugal force, and are close to the inner wall of the pump body. During the rotation of the rotor, due to the continuous increase and decrease of the closed volume between the vanes , to realize the process of oil absorption and oil pressure. Every time the rotor rotates once, it completes oil absorption and oil pressure twice. There is also a safety valve in the pump body to limit the maximum pressure. When the external load of the Steering System increases, causing the oil pressure to rise to a certain value, the safety valve opens to unload the load. A throttle valve and a flow control valve are also installed in the pump body to ensure that the displacement of the booster pump is basically stable.

Power Steering Hydraulic Oil Pump

Heavy steering:

1. Fault symptoms. Vehicles equipped with power steering should have been very light to steer, but they feel difficult and heavy to steer during driving.

2. Fault cause. The oil storage tank is short of oil or the oil level is lower than the specified requirements; Poor sealing and leakage at each oil pipe joint; Air has seeped into the steering hydraulic circuit; Deformation of oil pipe and blockage of oil pipeline; The tension of the power Steering Pump transmission belt is insufficient, and the transmission belt slips; The internal wear and leakage of the power steering pump are serious, making the output pressure of the oil pump not up to standard; The pressure regulating valve in the power steering pump fails, resulting in low output pressure; Internal leakage of steering control valve and power cylinder; The mechanical steering system is damaged or improperly adjusted.

3. Fault diagnosis. When heavy steering occurs, the following methods can be used for diagnosis:

(a) Check whether the tire pressure is normal and inflate it according to the specified pressure.

(b) Check whether each oil pipe joint of the steering hydraulic system leaks, and whether the oil pipe is damaged, deformed, or cracked. Replace the oil pipe once it is found to have defects; If the oil pipe joint leaks, it should be tightened, and if necessary, the oil pipe should be replaced and reconnected.

(c) Check the tension of the power steering pump drive belt to see if the drive belt is slipping or damaged. If any problem is found, adjust the tightness of the drive belt or replace it with a new one according to regulations.

(d) Detect the power steering pump output oil pressure to determine the component where the fault is located. Before testing, connect a pressure gauge (with a valve) suitable for the specified oil pressure between the power steering pump pressure output port and the steering control valve pressure input pipe. During testing, open the pressure gauge valve to full open, start the engine to run at idle speed, rotate the steering wheel to the left or right limit position, and measure the output oil pressure of the steering oil pump. If the oil pressure does not reach the pressure specified by the original factory, and the oil pressure does not rise when gradually closing the pressure gauge valve, it indicates that the power steering pump is in trouble; If the oil pressure does not reach the specified value of the original factory, but the oil pressure tends to rise when the pressure gauge valve is gradually closed, and the oil pressure can reach the specified value, it indicates that the power steering pump is in good condition, and the fault lies in the steering control valve or the power cylinder; If the oil pressure is normal during testing, the fault is in the mechanical steering system.

(e) Check the mechanical steering system. Rotate the steering wheel to check whether the components related to the steering column shaft rotate flexibly; Check whether the steering universal joint and ball joint connection parts of each transmission rod are too tight; Check whether the thrust bearing of the steering knuckle is lack of oil or damaged. If any problem is found, adjust it or replace it and reinstall it; If the above detection is normal, the fault lies in the steering gear. Check the rack and pinion steering gear, adjust the pressing force of the rack top block, make the lateral clearance between the rack and the gear appropriate, and ensure that the rack can move freely. For bent racks, replace them.
