Working principle of Hydraulic Power Steering Pump

Steering pumps mainly include vane, gear, plunger and so on. The most used is the vane pump. The main parts are stator, rotor, oil distribution plate, vane, pump body and back cover, etc. The pump body is equipped with a flow control valve and a safety valve. When the pump is working, the slide valve has a certain opening, so that the flow can meet the specified requirements, and the excess flow returns to the smoking cavity of the pump. If the oil circuit is blocked or an accident occurs, and the system pressure exceeds the maximum working pressure of the pump, the safety valve will be opened, the slide valve will be fully opened, and all the pressure oil will return to the oil suction chamber, which will protect the system safely.

When the engine speed is further increased, the oil pressure in the oil pump also increases accordingly, the flow rate of the oil pump increases, and the difference between the inside and outside of the gauge hole also increases, causing the flow pressure control valve plunger to move forward in a step. When the flow pressure of the booster pump increases to a predetermined value, making the acting force of the pressure difference between the two ends of the plunger sufficient to overcome the preload of the control valve spring, the spring is further compressed, and the spool valve plunger is pushed forward to expose the overflow hole (oil inlet chamber), The oil outlet hole of the oil pump is communicated with the overflow hole. As a result, a portion of the oil in the oil outlet hole flows into the oil inlet chamber through the slide valve plunger, and the flow output through the metering hole decreases. When the flow decreases to a certain value, the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the metering hole is not sufficient to balance the tension of the spring, and the plunger is pushed down by the spring, cutting off the passage into and out of the oil hole again, so that the flow of the steering oil pump is controlled within a certain range. The oil output of the pump increases with the rotational speed of the rotor, and the pressure of the output oil depends on the load of the power Steering System. In order to limit the maximum working pressure in the power steering system and the output oil volume of the oil pump, a flow pressure safety control valve is installed in the pump.
